Carol Grace Miller - flower portraits

and other oil paintings

Carol Grace Miller

Carol was born & raised in rural northern California.
Her mother is from a family of artists from England
and went to San Francisco School of Art and Design.
Her father had his own businesses drilling water
wells and farming.  She was influenced by both the
creative and practical growing up.

Although Carol painted as a child, she studied classical
music for 10 years instead of going directly into art.
The discipline of classical music paved the way for the structure of her paintings and the subtle emotions of composers translated into her wide range of moods and colors.

Carol moved to the East Coast from California about
6 years ago.  It was a move of new beginnings, a
new marriage to her "soulmate" and a new environ-
ment.  The move from west to east also occasioned
a change from watercolor to oil.  "I said I would
never paint in oils, but the focus on history and
tradition on the East Coast seemed to fit with oil.
I find I really enjoy the smoothness of the paint."
Another focus of Carol's work became flowers.  "The unfurling petals lend themselves to a study of movement, mood and balance.  I have focused on creating
large canvases of a single flower, like a soloist on
stage.  I am also fascinated with the shading of light on draped cloth, which I use in a lot of my
paintings."

Carol has had one-person shows in Santa Rosa,
California, and has won blue ribbons in California
and Pennsylvania.  Her work is also shown locally
in Fairfield, Blue Ridge summit, and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
